Oakland's community
DIY auto shop

Rent a car lift by the hour with every tool included, from hand tools to engine hoists and transmission jacks. Your hours never expire, and there's no contract.

950 77th Ave, right off the 880 · Tours daily, no pressure

Roll up

Book the bay.
Pull straight in.

Reserve a two-post lift by the hour, from $60 a month. Hours roll over, so a project that stalls for a fortnight costs you nothing.

Inside

Four bays. Every tool
already on the wall.

Two-post lifts, an engine hoist, a transmission jack, air, and a full wall of hand and power tools. You bring the car and the parts.

Up on the lift

Get it
in the air.

Book a bay, put it on the lift, and take your time. Nobody is waiting on the space, and nobody is charging you for it.

01The problem

Your driveway isn't a garage.

Your landlord doesn't want your transmission on the lawn.

And a shop charges you $180/hr to do what you could do yourself.

GaragePass is the third option: a real shop, with real lifts and real tools, that you book by the hour.

Your lift.

Book your time online and the bay is yours for the slot. Nobody is sharing it, and nobody is going to ask you to drop the car so they can take a turn.

03The tools

Stop buying a $400 tool
for one job

Hand tools through engine hoists, transmission jacks and smoke machines, included with no rental fee. Bring your own if you prefer them.

04The cleanup

Who runs the shop

Built by someone who
needed it to exist

Abraham Barkhordar started GaragePass in Oakland for the reason most people join it: knowing how to do the work, and having nowhere to do it. A driveway you are not allowed to use, a landlord who objects, and a shop quoting $150 an hour for a job you could do yourself in an afternoon.

So the shop is built the way a mechanic would want it rather than the way a rental business would: hours that roll over instead of expiring, tools included instead of itemised, and no contract to cancel. He is usually on the floor, and the tours are run by him rather than by a salesperson.
